How is salicylic acid extracted from wintergreen (gaultheria procumbens leaf oil)?
Plant salicylic acid is made from wintergreen. Its English name is "wintergreen". This small, hardy shrub is native to the forests of North America, Canada and China.
The distillation of wintergreen leaves produces an essential oil. This essential oil, concentrated in methyl slicylate, is then hydrolysed to isolate salicylic acid.
How to use salicylic acid BHA extracted from wintergreen?
Caution: it is not recommended to apply wintergreen essential oil purely because its effect can be irritating. It is better to choose a treatment that contains a small dose.
Salicylic acid is very active. A small dose is sufficient for good effectiveness. In a facial care product we recommend between 0.1% and 3%. In some countries the concentration in facial care products is regulated. In Japan the maximum concentration allowed is 0.2%.
